The TOTAL Medical Caravan

Every year, the Moroccan Government invests several million Dirhams in improving the health conditions of the Moroccan people.
Today, almost 90% of Moroccan children are vaccinated and the mortality rate for women has been in steep decline for several years…

But access to medical care is still difficult for rural populations.

Heart of Gazelles, in partnership with the Moroccan Ministry of Health, the Moroccan Ministry for Family, Solidarity and Social Development and the Moroccan National Mutual Aid Society, decided to address this public health issue by going to the remote regions of southern Morocco.

Thanks to the sponsorship of TOTAL Energy Group and the infrastructure of the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles, Heart of Gazelles has organized an annual Medical Caravan every year since 2001. This traveling clinic composed of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, opticians and "logistics" personnel provides free services in general medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology, optometry, diabetes testing and pharmacy.

The people living in the remote southern villages visited by the Caravan are more than 100 kilometres from the nearest clinic or hospital. In addition, a medical consultation and treatment can cost more than 15 days of salary.

TOTAL - HEART OF GAZELLES Medical Caravan - Annual Report for 2010:

• 4875 consultations provided to the local populations in 6 medical specialities.

277 suspicious cases were referred to hospitals in ERRACHIDIA, ZAGORA, TATA and OUARZAZATE, or teaching hospitals.

• Gynaecology: 4 workshops and individual consultations on breast and gynaecological cancers, medical care during pregnancy, contraception, the advantages of giving birth in a hospital.

• Ophthalmology: 297 persons were consulted, among whom many cases of Cataracts and Trachomatous Trichiasis were identified (9 surgeries). Systematic testing for Trachoma was carried out.

• Cataracts to be operated on: 42 patients by OSF and other associations.
