In southern Morocco, between Djebel Bani and Oued Drâa, stretches the dried lakebed of Iriki. This arid setting is home to 30 nomad families who have put up their tents by a well, where they stay all year round. Only the fathers follow the herd. Heart of Gazelles has come to know these families well, as the association provides them with medical care every year during the medical caravan’s visit.
We have responded to the need to provide an education fo
r the village's 25 children by creating a school. The Ibeyd School:
- For whom? 25 children between the ages of 4 and 16. The children's lessons will focus on Arabic, arithmetic and the French alphabet. The school will also provide instruction to all family members, varied and tailored to each individual.
- With what resources? The creation of this school involved the installation of a solid tent, resistant to sand storms, furnished with a blackboard and mattresses for the children to sit on.
A full-time paid teacher provides written and oral lessons for 6 hours per day (3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening), 20 days per month.
- With what goal? Heart of Gazelles will help those nomad families who want to integrate their children into the public school system, by communicating with the Zagora Education Office.
Finally, Heart of Gazelles provides food aid to the families in order to ensure that the children are able to benefit from the services of the school.
Thanks to all of the project's sponsors:Modern'Optique (and in particular Jean-Charles De Lemps), Julien Lorber, Bernard Guemas, Fabienne Lalande, Pascal Burg, Patrick Duplessis, Laeticia Labastire, Céline Carles, SARL GDICBRE, Bonvoisin Vincent, Laurent Jean-Marie, Jean Brossard, Sidonie Dubrule, Chris Ivars, Christelle Valerian, Serge Barbieux, Mo Samson, Patricia Cicilianni, Serge Anton, Alain and Viviane Vrillacq, and Reader's Digest Selections / France Bleu for awarding us 2nd Prize in their Solidarity Awards.
Thanks to you, the Nomad school opened its doors on January 15th 2010.
12 children attend the school in the morning, and 13 in the afternoon. The teacher, whose salary is paid by Heart of Gazelles, lives at the school, with time off to visit home (in Mhamid) twice a month. In keeping with local traditions and customs, the children sit on mats on the floor.
On March 25th we held an official "inauguration" of the Ibeyd school in the presence of the association's patron, André Manoukian. It was a festive occasion ... Theatre group Compagnie des Sherpas put on quite a show for the excited children.

MADRASSA school
The dunes of Merzouga stretch across southeastern Morocco. Two years ago, some twenty nomad families moved into the abandoned village of Tamsguidat, at the foot of the dunes.
They rebuilt houses and created a stable home base. Their 25 children are unable to attend the local school because it is 4 km from the village, making an 8 km round trip, on foot.
We feel that it is essential to build a school ("Madrassa" in Berber) for these children.
Thanks to our sponsor SUEZ Environnement, we began construction in February 2010. The school will be operational in time for the start of the new school year in September 2010.
For whom? To begin with, 25 children between 6 and 12 years of age. The children will learn mainly Arabic, arithmetic and the French alphabet.
With what resources? Land belonging to the Moroccan Government has been placed at the disposal of the nomads for building the school. The school will consist of a 32 m² classroom and bathrooms.
A teacher will provide written and oral lessons for 6 hours every day (3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening), 20 days a month.
With what goal? Heart of Gazelles will then assist those nomad families who want to send their children to college or university, by communicating with the Education Office in Meknès. In short, "Giving them a chance for the future"...
