REINTEGRATING WOMEN into the WORKFORCE
In Ouarzazate, there are 40 single mothers who have families to support and no working income. 15 of them are prostitutes; the others beg for a living.
We decided to join together with a local organization to provide these women with a better future. After studying the options, it was decided to open a bakery, providing work for the women who would then become financially autonomous and better able to provide for their children.
For whom?
40 single women with young children.
With what resources?
After coming to an agreement with the National Mutual Aid Society, a spacious locale has been found and placed at the organization's disposal.
Once fully equipped, the locale will become a huge kitchen.
What is needed: two 4-burner stoves, 2 refrigerators, 2 freezers, 4 ovens, 2 microwave ovens, 1 toaster, 2 pressure-cookers, 2 blenders, 2 eggbeaters, 1 dishwasher...
All of the women will be trained in "Traditional Moroccan Cuisine".
How much income will be generated?Every day, the women will produce: 40 kg of plain and almond pastries, 20 kg of couscous, 100 loaves of bread, 100 Msemen, 100 croissants and 100 crepes.
These products will be sold in the souks. After deducting the cost of the ingredients and energy, each woman will earn enough to provide for herself and her children,
eliminating the need for prostitution and begging. Thanks to the generosity of Amy Lerner and the Lerner Foundation, this project will see the light of day in October 2011. We will keep you posted of our progression in the coming weeks.
