PICALA
An observation:
In rural Morocco, less than one in ten girls goes to college, as opposed to one in two in urban centres.
Identified Causes:
The physical distance from college is one of the major factors influencing school dropout rates for girls living in rural areas:
- Colleges are often several kilometres away along a rocky track.
- There are no means of transportation: no school buses, or other alternate solutions.
The “PICALA” story (“bicycle” in Berber)Skoura, Ouarzazate region, Morocco – End of year celebration in the small Oulad Lâarbiya School. The names of the students who passed their exams are announced.
Among this year’s graduates is
Ghita; she will go to college next year. The problem: the college is 7 kilometres from her village, or a 2-hour walk. And a bicycle would cost a month’s salary for her family.
Brilliant and determined,
Ghita knows what she wants: “to study”. Touched by the predicament of
Ghita and of other girls who, like her, may not be able to continue their studies, we decide to act.
Our action:Through the sale of
2008 Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles calendars, in partnership
with AZEKKA France-Maroc (
www.azekka.org), we were able to provide
80 bikes for Ghita and her classmates.
After a day of training, the children left with their new bikes, happy that they will now be able to get to college.
Objective in 2009:Many children are in need of a bicycle. Azekka France-Maroc Association identifies children who correspond to their criteria: they must be entering a college more than 4 kilometres from home, and their family income must be too low.
We still have 100 bikes to finance (60 Euros per bike).
