March 29 - Zaouia Sidi Ebd en Nebi

After 4 hours of trail driving we reach this douar of 70 inhabitants close to the dried bed of Lac Iriqui. As the Aïcha truck is unable to pass through this hostile desert zone, the 4WD vehicles have to transport all of the medical, optical and pharamaceutical materials and equipment for this final day of consultations.

March 27-28 - Bleida and Tiraf

Bleida and Tiraf are two villages in the Oulad Amer commune group. We are provided with the use of a dispensary and a school, respectively. Despite the lists that were drawn up by the heads of the douars [small villages], people crowd in front of the doors. With the help of the local authorities, the flow of patients is controlled without too many problems.

March 25 - Leg 3 - Lahfira

Today the Medical Caravan sets up in the Lahfira school where the teachers and tribal leaders have already arranged for all of the families of the douar to receive consultations. They have prepared ordered lists of the 55 families, representing some 500 patients.

March 24 - Leg 3 - Tafraoukht

Up earlier than usual, tents are folded and bags are loaded into the 4WD, for the 2-hour drive by trail and road to the village of Tafraoukht. The team of doctors is greeted by members of the local council, who let us into the two classrooms of the small school.

Heart of Gazelles in Photos

March 23 - Leg 2 - Merzane

This morning the Medical Caravan sets up in Merzane, a village of sparse houses and a particularly poor population, most of whom make a living working in the local fossil quarries.
The local authorities have prepared for our arrival, setting up a process for handling the steady flow of residents who come out in great numbers to consult the doctors and nurses. The turnout confirms that the Caravan is responding to a real need in the local population.

March 22 - Leg 1 - Jdaid

First leg for the TOTAL / Heart of Gazelles Medical Caravan, 2 hours by trail from the Neijakh bivouac.
The semi-sedentary nomad populations of Jdaid and Ouzina come to meet the medical team at the offices of the local authorities.
The doctors spend the day seeing patients from this extremely isolated community on the edge of the Algerian border.

After arriving a few at a time during the night, all members of the Heart of Gazelles team were present this morning at the bivouac. The Medical Caravan, Donations Unit and Eco-Caravan greet each other and meet the new members, who are excited at the idea of taking part in this human adventure.
