Amazing! The Gazelles didn't deny themselves the pleasure of the dunes today: most of them opted for the CPX checkpoints placed in the heart of Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga.
After yesterday's rain, the competitors were greeted by a firm and stable terrain this morning when they reached Erg Chebbi. But appearances can be deceiving! As the hours passed, the sand warmed and softened and the Gazelles... got stuck.

Leg 4: the dunes!
By the shovelful, by the truckload, by hand... Sunday March 22nd will remain imprinted in many Gazelles' memories as the day they tackled the dunes. It is certain that they will need shovels and a good dose of determination to reach the CPX checkpoints placed high in the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
For today's leg, the Gazelles can follow the route of their choice: the "X" route through the dunes, a route around the dunes, or an intermediate route. A small penalty will be applied for choosing the easier routes.
So the question is: mountains of sand or rocky hills and plateaus with few landmarks? Last year, 70% of the teams - of all levels and experience - opted for the irresistible dunes, and very few regretted it!
